IMPROVING TEACHING: POINT OF DEPARTURE

General characteristics

The five universities that comprise the Valencian Public University System (SUPV) are the principal point of reference for higher education and research activities in the Valencian Community (CV):

  • More than 127,000 students are enrolled in the institutions of the SUPV. Nine of every ten students in the CV study at one of the five Valencian public universities.
  • The SUPV’s research and teaching staff boasts more than 10,000 lecturers – a number which has increased by 35% since 1998/99. This growth has allowed issues related to overcrowding in previous decades to be addressed and overcome. It has also permitted the universities to diversify, to renew and expand the range of programmes offered and to free up more human resources for R&D activities.
  • The universities that comprise the SUPV enjoy an elevated capacity to attract students due to the wide range of programmes available and the positive reputations of the university centres. SUPV students whose families are not residents of the CV make up 12.9% of the student body. Of these students, 7.9% are from other autonomous communities in Spain and 5% come from abroad.
  • The SUPV’s growth has allowed it to substantially increase the number of university degrees it can offer students in the CV and to expand its base of highly-qualified human capital. In the last decade alone, more than 200,000 university professional, bachelor’s and engineering degrees have been awarded by Valencian universities. The number of Valencians currently holding university degrees has increased by a factor of 2.8 since 1991.
  • At present, more than 434 thousand university graduates work in the Valencian economy, compared to 168 thousand with this level of qualification in 1995. This represents an increase by a factor of 2.6 in the number of employees with higher education degrees, the greatest increase in Valencian history.
  • In 2008, 53.4% of executive managers working in the CV had university degrees. The number of executives with higher education degrees has doubled in a little less than a decade. This improvement in the level of professional qualification in the leaders of Valencia’s business community is critical for the future of these businesses in an environment in which a company’s ability to compete depends crucially on knowledge.

Educational programmes

The five universities that comprise the SUPV offer a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in all branches of knowledge, particularly those disciplines related to Habitat and Territory. The five universities offered the following programmes in the 2010/2011 academic year in Habitat and Territory:

  • 63 bachelor’s degree programmes
  • 95 university master’s degree programmes, 17 of which were inter-university master’s programmes of the SUPV and eight international inter-university master’s degrees:

The numbers of students pursuing degrees in the area of Habitat and Territory were as follows:

  • Bachelor’s degree students: 50,000
  • University master’s degree students: 4,450
  • Doctoral degree students: 1,000

Internacional arena

The five universities have successfully developed and employed strategies for internationalization, including the following:

  • The UV has received the second highest number of Erasmus students of all European universities, it holds sixth place in terms of the number of students sent abroad, and is the fourth Spanish university in the world ranking (positioned between 201st and 300th in the world according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranking).
  • The UPV has received the third highest number of Erasmus students among all European universities, it holds fifth place in terms of the number of students sent abroad, and shares fifth place among the Spanish universities in the world ranking (positioned between 301st and 400th in the world according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranking).
  • The UJI is pioneering the implementation of the Euruji project in Spain. This programme is based on EURINSA of INSA Lyon, and consists of a two-year first cycle in industrial engineering with a limited number of pre-selected students of different nationalities, including students from both Europe and North and South America.
  • At the UA and the UMH, international students make up 5% of undergraduate student body, this figure is 10% for master’s degree students, and 20% for doctoral students.

More than 7,000 Erasmus and other exchange programme students study at the five SUPV universities. The number of international students in master’s and doctoral programmes exceeds 3,500.

In the area of Habitat and Territory, the data for international students are as follows:

  • Erasmus students and students from other exchange programmes: 1,571
  • International students in official master’s degree and doctoral programmes: 992

It is also important to mention that according to the Chinese government, the UV is one of the 10 best universities in the world at which to study Chinese language and culture. In fact, the UV is one of the first three Spanish universities to establish a Confucius Institute of Chinese language and culture. The institute promotes the study of the Chinese language, and serves as a centre for teacher and student exchanges.

Entreprenurial culture and employability

The development of a social environment conducive to science, innovation and entrepreneurship require the implementation of measures that foster the entrepreneurial spirit.

In this respect, the five universities that comprise CAMPUSHABITAT5U already have a strong history of encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit amongst the student body, educating students who are capable of not only looking for employment, but creating it as well. The entrepreneurial spirit is fostered through the universities’ different departments, bodies and programmes, including the following:

  • University-Business Foundation of Valencia (ADEIT)
  • University Entrepreneurship Programme of the Antena University
  • Institute for the Creation and Development of Enterprises (IDEAS)
  • Chair for Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise (INCREA)
  • The Jovellanos Forum
  • Bancaja Chair for Young Entrepreneurs
  • Impulso Awards
  • The Inizia Programme

Another critical aspect to consider for the employment prospects of graduates is workforce placement. In pursuit of this goal, the five universities of CAMPUSHABITAT5U have given permanent priority to workforce orientation and placement via:

  • the organization of job fairs;
  • the provision of support in procuring internships;
  • collaboration with the government of Valencia in the promotion of active employment policies.

Many degree programmes already have excellent results in finding initial employment within the first six months after graduation. Part of this success is due to the tireless efforts of the current workplace placement units at CAMPUSHABITAT5U:

Of particular note are the efforts of the Servipoli Foundation of the UPV. The fundamental goal and efforts of the foundation are directed at student education through workplace experience in order to improve employability and to contribute towards future career placement.

One of the added values of CAMPUSHABITAT in entrepreneurial culture and employability will be the coordination of the measures undertaken by the different units to improve and increase possibilities for the creation of self-employment and to find initial employment for students in the area of Habitat and Territory.

Adaptation to the EHEA

Learning and teaching processes stipulated by the EHEA involve the creation of a new type of infrastructure. In recent years, CAMPUSHABITAT5U has been working towards adapting to the needs involved in complying with the EHEA.

  • Teaching infrastructure
    • Classrooms and teaching laboratories have been adapted to the new requirements to allow smaller group sessions, seminars, group work, etc.
    • An Action Plan for Network Teaching has been put into effect to foster the use of ICTs in teaching practice, supporting lecturers in all processes related to innovative actions and providing both resources and support services to help in the application of these technologies in teaching practice.
  • Educational innovation
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U has centres and units dedicated to the development of experimental programmes to support both teaching staff and students in this area.

    • Innovation and educational quality teams:These are teaching and research staff teams from different disciplines that share common goals in educational innovation and research and which represent a driver for change and the generation of knowledge about university teaching.The leading lines of action are, among others, active methods for the teaching and learning of competences, alternative evaluation strategies for the development of competences, learning and evaluation activities, and technological resources in support of learning.
    • Innovation and educational improvement projects: Teaching and research staff teams submit annual educational innovation projects applicable to the official degree programmes in Habitat and Territory. Their purpose is to improve academic performance and student learning, placing primary emphasis on the development of both specific and general competences. The areas of focus include experimentation in active methods, accompaniment through learning, experimentation with evaluation instruments and strategies, multidisciplinary coordination, improving teaching practices and fostering multidisciplinary teamwork aimed at reflection and the improvement of teaching practice, coordination of internships in professional settings, and the integration of technological resources into classroom teaching.
  • Transformation of libraries to Learning and Research Resource Centres (LRRCs): In their effort to adapt to the challenges that new teaching methods and the EHEA imply, the libraries of the five universities have undergone significant evolution and transformation, both in terms of their functions and their equipment, with a commitment to providing spaces for small group work, computer rooms and study tables with technological equipment. Furthermore, together the five universities in the strategic group currently boast excellent library resources in the sphere of Habitat and Territory.

IMPROVING TEACHING: OBJECTIVES AND STRANDS OF ACTION

General objectives


The objectives are as follows:

  • To establish CAMPUSHABITAT5U’s position as an international hub of excellence in Habitat and Territory.
  • To create an environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship in the sphere of Habitat and Territory in order to foment increased employability.
  • To provide an interdisciplinary higher education system in Habitat and Territory that improves the skills of students and their ability to meet social needs.
  • To contribute to social and territorial cohesion in the cities and rural areas of the territory.
  • To establish an integrated environment between CAMPUSHABITAT5U and vocational training centres (FP) to promote sustainable and inclusive development in the field of Habitat and Territory and to encourage the participation of the greatest number of stakeholders in the territory as possible.

Strans of action


The measures required to achieve these objectives are listed below.

The measures are grouped into five strands of action:

Strand 1. Teaching excellence in Habitat and Territory

The creation of CAMPUSHABITAT5U will permit courses and content offered, as well as the quality of teaching and learning processes in Habitat and Territory, to be addressed jointly, generating significant synergies among the five universities that comprise the strategic alliance. The primary measures to be carried out in this area are:

  • Creation of the Strategic Teaching Plan for Habitat and Territory
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U will draft a Strategic Teaching Plan that will help to build consensus and aid in coordinating and streamlining undergraduate and post-graduate programmes offered by the five Valencian public universities in Habitat and Territory.
    This plan will be the foundation for providing first-class educational programmes and content with a sufficient critical mass to increase the international projection and visibility of the university system of the Valencian Community.
  • Creation of the HABITAT5U International Doctoral School (for further details, please refer to section 2.2., Scientific Advancement and Knowledge Transfer)
  • Promotion of young talent in the sphere of Habitat and Territory
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U will promote excellence in teaching and learning processes in bachelor’s degree programmes in Habitat and Territory by means of:

    • The creation of High Academic Performance Groups (ARA Groups). The purpose of this is to reinforce the potential of students who stand out in degree programmes in Habitat and Territory and to promote the recruitment of broad array of talent within the framework of the creation of the HABITAT5U International Doctoral School (for further information, please refer to section 2.2., Scientific Advancement and Knowledge Transfer).
    • CAMPUSHABITAT5U Awards for the best final bachelor’s degree projects related to Habitat and Territory
  • Leadership and Personnel Management Programme (PLGP) in the sphere of Habitat and Territory
    This programme aims to develop human resources for experienced academic professionals as well as young talent. The objective is to create an academic culture of excellence in the area of Habitat and Territory. In order to achieve this, the programme will centre its efforts on the development of effective leadership and communications skills among teaching staff and university students.The PLGP offers a wide range of activities for developing skills (leadership, motivation, team building, etc.) in different formats (workshops, short-term intensive courses, small group activities, conferences, individual training, experience-based knowledge exchange seminars, and so on).The PLGP will offer knowledge, experience and contacts to help the university teaching staff to update, deepen and complement the skills and knowledge they have acquired over their professional careers. In order to achieve this, the programme has established as one of its key objectives knowledge exchange seminars with discussion groups founded on practical knowledge and applications with specialized university teaching staff and business executives active in the sphere of Habitat and Territory employed as external instructors.
  • Talent programme for education and leadership
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U recognizes that one of the priority areas in which it must act is in the social setting(one of the four priority areas of action of CAMPUSHABITAT5U) as it is an ideal area in which to foster transformative processes. At the same time, the social dimension of inclusive and sustainable growth is at the heart of this collaborative programme and at the core of CAMPUSHABITAT5U. For this reason, CAMPUSHABITAT5U will strive to eliminate inequality in education through the education of future leaders in university environments.Cultivating leadership as a basic professional skill will:

    • allow future students and graduates to become agents for educational change;
    • have an effect not only in the classroom, but also in organizations and in the learning process;
    • help to address a challenge which reaches beyond the scope of education; since education’s applicability to transferable skills reinforces the capabilities and attitudes of professionals, which in turn allows for the programme’s ambassadors to combine their efforts in the CV.

CAMPUSHABITAT5U aims to combine the efforts of the group’s participants through education and leadership provided by the Talent Programme to contribute to the social and territorial cohesion of the cities and rural areas of the CV. In an environment in which social changes lead to increased inequality and the emergence of new risks of social exclusion, CAMPUSHABITAT5U aims to become a leading advocate for the orchestration and coordination of measures to build cohesion among its members, as well as a platform for the promotion of cooperative relationships, in order to actively participate in the collective construction of new educational and public models for social inclusion.

  • Guarantee of teaching quality
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U must guarantee the quality of their instruction in Habitat and Territory, following established procedures and recording evidence of this.In order to understand the characteristics, needs and expectations of their environment (both within Spain and abroad) to ensure that what the universities provide meets the demands of society and to track the progress of all of these initiatives, CAMPUSHABITAT5U will establish a set of consensual criteria and procedures which guarantee educational quality in Habitat and Territory.

Strand 2. Entrepreneurship, employability and lifelong learning in Habitat and Territory

CAMPUSHABITAT5U represents a one-of-a-kind strategic asset for improving entrepreneurship and employability in Habitat and Territory, an unparalleled opportunity to counteract the severity of the economic crisis in the Valencian Community and the high level of unemployment in the construction sector.

To accomplish this, CAMPUSHABITAT5U will create a Coordination Platform with the objective of:

  • providing the general public access to the collective resources of the five Habitat and Territory universities;
  • providing an avenue for the general public, and particularly the productive sector, to express their concerns and needs to the five CAMPUSHABITAT5U universities.

The platform will promote and administer the development and implementation of the joint activities of the five universities in all fields that favour the exchange of knowledge, and thus help to spur economic development and progress.

The primary focus of the measures of the Coordination Platform are entrepreneurship, employability and lifelong learning.

  • Entrepreneurship in the sphere of Habitat and TerritoryAt CAMPUSHABITAT5U the creation of businesses as a strategy for the marketing and transfer of research results emerging from work done in the sphere of Habitat and Territory is a key strategic element. It includes the implementation of programmes by CAMPUSHABITAT5U to promote an entrepreneurial environment and provide incentives for the creation of technology-based enterprises (TBEs). Transforming academic research into a valuable asset for business requires the promotion of teaching and research that is fully compatible with the development of TBEs. Furthermore, it is critical that the business community be actively involved in all stages of the process.The measures to be undertaken by the CAMPUSHABITAT5U Coordination Platform to foster entrepreneurship and enterprise are as follows:
    • Inclusion of entrepreneurial and innovation skills in educational programmes in Habitat and Territory.
    • Reinforcement of educational programmes in entrepreneurship and innovation to promote the creation of technology-based enterprises in Habitat and Territory by research personnel and professionals. Education in this area will have the following objectives:
      • To stimulate innovative capacity
      • To empower individual talent
      • To apply creative thinking to problem solving
      • To develop leadership and entrepreneurial capacity
      • To provide a contemporary vision of strategic business management techniques and to have a basic understanding of organization, technology, innovation, ICT, etc.
      • To promote the capacity to integrate new processes and equipment
    • Promotion of voluntary student internships in companies in the start-up phase in the area of Habitat and Territory
    • Promotion of the recognition of graduate final projects in new business feasibility studies in the area of Habitat and Territory
    • Creation of a unique service where entrepreneurs interested in setting up a company in the field of Habitat and Territory can obtain support and advice to successfully carry out their business project
    • Employment of substitute professors in order to allow academic personnel involved in the business creation/development process for technology-based enterprises that emerge from research in Habitat and Territory to fully dedicate their efforts to the project
  • Employability in the sphere of Habitat and TerritoryCAMPUSHABITAT will coordinate the activities of the different departments of the five universities in the group in order to improve and increase the possibilities of finding initial employment for graduates in the fields that comprise Habitat and Territory. In order to achieve this, mechanisms will be created to increase the efficacy of employment services.One of the measures that will be pursued by the Coordination Platform will be the creation of a Habitat and Territory Virtual Employment Observatory (HTVEO) in order to coordinate between the different institutions and businesses that are primarily involved in employment placement, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning in the CV.Establishing the HTVEO as a model of inter-university collaboration will entail the inclusion of different local parties involved in the field, among these, technology institutes in the CV and leading sector-specific clusters.The objective of the HTVEO is to increase the employability of graduates and professionals in the sphere of Habitat and Territory through the provision of a catalogue of services to be developed which will include the following measures:
    • Prospective analyses on the generation of new market segments
    • Identification of new professional profiles
    • Creation of new specialized innovative educational products directed at the acquisition and development of skills for finding employment
    • Provision of workforce placement and professional orientation services
    • Provision of joint professional and employment orientation programmes with participating CAMPUSHABITAT5U organizations

The ideal format for the HTVEO is an open virtual environment, accessible to all parties active in both universities and businesses in the CV, with the aim of acquiring continual up-to-date information on new segments, profiles, employment opportunities and professional practices. This will be a website by and for all stakeholders in the field of Habitat and Territory.

The HTVEO is a key initiative which is already being by advanced by organizations involved in CAMPUSHABITAT5U. As an example, the HTVEO has already begun work on the design phase of an interesting joint project, the Virtual Learning Environment (EVA – Habitat Employment), which aims to improve employability.

EVA – Habitat Employment is intended to be a specialized and innovative educational product for the acquisition and development of skills for employment.

Several multi-disciplinary groups from CAMPUSHABITAT5U are involved in the project including, but not limited to, engineers, mathematicians and psychologists. These specialists are working with 3D graphics, virtual reality and civil simulations, and on the creation of employment services which define requisites and catalogue materials.

Another project to be implemented by the Coordination Platform in all of the CAMPUSHABITAT5U member institutions is the Servipoli Foundation activity model. The fundamental goal and the efforts of the foundation are directed at student education through workplace experience in order to promote employability and to contribute towards future career placement. Through the provision of services to its clients, the foundation will conduct different activities which will provide students with training in wide-ranging skills, as well as knowledge and experience required in most employment situations. Providing this service will also allow students to put knowledge acquired in their university studies into practise.

  • Lifelong learning in Habitat and Territory
    The Coordination Platform will act as an instrument to integrate all lifelong learning programmes in Habitat and Territory in the five universities that make up the strategic alliance.The platform will support lifelong learning and the needs of students and professionals working in close collaboration with the Habitat and Territory business community. To this end, the platform will promote the incorporation of business professionals to achieve a balanced mix of CAMPUSHABITAT5U lecturers and leaders from the business world. Furthermore, the platform will promote the involvement of business professionals in the development of specialized courses.The actions to be pursued by the platform will primarily include planning, drafting proposals, administration and follow-up assessment of lifelong learning in Habitat and Territory:

    • Planning of lifelong learning proposals
    • Support on administration of verification processes, follow-up assessment and accreditation of lifelong learning certifications
    • Definition of a roadmap of lifelong learning certifications
    • Planning of the promotion and visibility of lifelong learning programmes abroad
    • Organization of instruction in transferable skills
    • Provision of extracurricular educational activities – both traditional and virtual – related to the topic of education and the development of skills and abilities that promote self-employment amongst the student body and graduates

Strand 3. Internationalization of the teaching staff in Habitat and Territory

CAMPUSHABITAT5U aspires to be an international leader in education in Habitat and Territory. In order to achieve this goal, CAMPUSHABITAT5U will concentrate its efforts on the following:

  • Consolidating an internationally attractive range of academic programmes in Habitat and Territory through:
  • Improving available inter-university international master’s degree programmes with the participation of the five universities that comprise CAMPUSHABITAT5U.
  • Promoting the Erasmus Mundus master’s degree programmes and Erasmus Mundus grants.
  • Strengthening the range of master’s degrees offered in English in order to attract students and teaching staff from other countries.
  • Establishing a international programme to publicize the range of educational programmes offered.
  • Developing a recruitment programmed directed at students in emerging countries.
  • Strengthening and coordinating services available to international students.
  • Designing a leading lifelong learning habitat programme as a tool to promote short-term international exchanges.
  • Strengthening international exchange and mobility in the sphere of Habitat and Territory through:
    • Developing a programme to foster the exchange of students from the five universities with other renowned universities. In order to accomplish this goal, CAMPUSHABITAT5U must improve the distribution of information and consulting services to students about the advantages and possibilities that exchanges can add to their university education.
    • Recruiting international bachelor’s degree and postgraduate students from the most prestigious European institutions in the sphere of Habitat and Territory.
    • Strengthening and coordinating the services required to foster the full participation in the life of CAMPUSHABITAT5U.
  • Establishing collaboration in the generation of scientific knowledge and skills as well as the publication of scientific information in Habitat and Territory with the Universities of Oran.
    • Facilitating and streamlining the exchange of teaching personnel and students within the framework of related regulation of both countries and internal procedures of each institution.
    • Promoting academic collaboration for the purpose of providing joint bachelor’s programmes, master’s degree programmes and lifelong learning with reciprocal recognition of credits in Habitat and Territory.
    • Promoting joint doctoral theses in the sphere of Habitat and Territory.

Strand 4. Inclusive higher education environment in Habitat and Territory

One of CAMPUSHABITAT5U’s strategic objectives is its commitment to:

  • achieving greater coordination and curricular integration between universities and vocational training centres (FP);
  • advancing towards an inclusive approach to the student body;
  • implementing lifelong learning as a foundational element of the project and one which is crucial to ensure the employability of professionals and students.

CAMPUSHABITAT5U will lead a joint project for the advancement of an integrated environment between the university and FP in order to promote sustainable and inclusive development in the field of Habitat and Territory and to involve the greatest number of stakeholders in the territory.

The definition of the map of strands of actions and measures to be undertaken provides CAMPUSHABITAT5U with the opportunity to build relationships on different levels between university instruction linked to the field of habitat and a wide range of upper-level training programmes (CFGs), encompassing professional groupings such as “construction and civil works” and “community socio-cultural services”.

This programme aims to coordinate upper-level vocational training centres (FPGSs) and CAMPUSHABITAT5U in order to guarantee effective bi-directional organization for the study of methods of recognizing acquired skills (credits) for the transfer of records from one educational institution to another.

This is a programme for inter-institutional cooperation which will take the form of a truly inclusive higher education environment, which will:

  • contribute towards specialized education in educational groupings related to the areas of interest to CAMPUSHABITAT5U;
  • promote the recruitment of well trained professionals to CAMPUSHABITAT5U centres and laboratories;
  • offer the opportunity to enhance the value of FPGSs.

CAMPUSHABITAT5U will develop this environment based on a series of measures, including the following:

  • Development of an integral model of relationships between CAMPUSHABITAT5U and upper level vocational training centres (FPGSs), establishing a permanent collaborative network and creating a compilation of state-level good practices. This measure will strive to establish effective coordination between CAMPUSHABITAT5U and FPGSs in order to maximize opportunities for students, reduce attrition rates and guarantee more efficient orientation while opening doors to university educational opportunities.
  • Recognition and validation: creation of a roadmap for the recognition and validation of courses at both levels of education.
  • Professional and academic orientation: workshops concentrating on FP with the participation of students and CAMPUSHABITAT5U teaching staff on the relationship between the productive sector as well as opportunities for continuing on to higher education at CAMPUSHABITAT5U to improve employability.
  • Shared infrastructure: creation of a catalogue of infrastructure which may be shared with FP centres (libraries, sports facilities) in order to promote workplace training (FCT) for students in GFGSs within CAMPUSHABITAT5U.
  • Innovation: establishment of awards for innovation in the area of Habitat and Territory oriented towards collaborative efforts involving FP and university students.
  • Grants Scheme for Training of Personnel for Technical Research Support (FPATI): the FPATI grants programme will offer internship positions every year in CAMPUSHABITAT5U laboratories and centres for students belonging to training groupings related to the areas of specialization of the campus (Habitat and Territory). These grants will have a duration of one year (extendable for a second year) and will be aimed at FPGS graduates who will join in research activities assigned to them under the supervision of a tutor.

The institutions promoting CAMPUSHABITAT5U are involved in several measures related to secondary education centres and FPGSs such as orientation and the transmission of information and the placement of FPGS students in internship positions in CAMPUSHABITAT5U research facilities. On another front, the universities have been involved in calls for proposals for the Grants Scheme for Training of Personnel for Technical Research Support (FPATI) for many years.

CAMPUSHABITAT5U provides an ideal environment for progress in the generation of inclusive higher education environments, bringing together several institutions and businesses interested in different levels of professional profiles, and increasing the capacity for international mobility of FP students, a key differentiating factor, given the current paucity of opportunity.

Strand 5. Adaptation to the EHEA

In order to achieve the objective of fully adapting to the European Higher Education Area, CAMPUSHABITAT5U will implement a range of measures in the following areas:

  • Unique teaching infrastructure and equipment
  • Educational innovation and new technologies
  • Transformation of learning and research resource centres (LRRCs)
  • Teaching infrastructure and equipmentDuring the process of consolidation in the EHEA, CAMPUSHABITAT5U plans to carry out the following specific measures, as well as others:
    • Infrastructure and equipment for teaching laboratories located in the Faculty of Geography and History of the UV Advanced Technical College of Engineering:
      • A Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing laboratory, and a geomorphology and palynology laboratory: computer materials for image and data processing (hardware and software) and laboratory materials for handling and processing sediments. These will help to maintain academic process based on the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge through experimentation. They are research and instructional support laboratories that are occasionally used to teach courses in geomorphology, photographic interpretation and cartography, soil studies, etc.
      • Prehistory and archaeology laboratory: This laboratory will be used for studying local archaeology as well as other pursuits. Equipment: optical microscopes and binocular magnifiers for the analysis of artefacts and biofacts from archaeological sites as well as computer materials for processing images and data (hardware and software).
      • Art history library: The mission of the art history library is to perform cutting-edge research for the development of learning methods that take advantage of the resources and tools provided by physical and chemical sciences, specialized photography, microscopy and new approaches to the theories of conservation and restoration for the study of works of art. Equipment: computer materials for image and data processing (hardware and software) and laboratory materials (infrared light apparatus, lasers, etc.).
      • The Renewable Energies Engineering Laboratory is founded on a real and growing demand for the preparation of specialists in the sector. A demand that will take on increasing importance in coming years due to the increasing importance placed on the rational use of energy in every sector. Equipment: advanced photovoltaic system, 5 kW decentralized wind farm; ddemonstration system for solar thermal energy with data capture system; wwind farm emulator based on double feed synchronous generation and solar thermal demonstration system.
      • Preparation of laboratory spaces for UA architecture and civil engineering internships in the warehouses of the old pilot plants.
  • Educational innovation and new technologies
    Teaching and learning processes oriented towards excellence, a sufficient and appropriate range of lifelong learning opportunities, as well as specific research and innovation have increasing implications for educational activities. CAMPUSHABITAT5U hopes to be able to continue providing resources and materials necessary for constant modernization. Specifically, the following measures are planned:
    • Transformation of current lecture rooms in the faculties of Universitat Jaume I to 2.0 lecture rooms, with improved Wi-Fi and new furnishings to enable students to work with laptops. Replacement of multimedia tables in UJI lecture rooms which use obsolete technology with tables adapted to the digital age. Fitting out of the lecture rooms at the UJI Postgraduate and Lifelong Learning Centre to technological standards similar to the other lecture rooms. Equipping new spaces for small-group seminars.
  • Transformation of libraries to Learning and Research Resource Centres (LRRCs)
    CAMPUSHABITAT5U’s objective is to consolidate the process of evolution and transformation of its libraries into Learning and Research Resource Centres (LRRCs) by jointly increasing available resources and services which support teaching, innovation and research. To this end, the following measures are planned:
    • Provision of spaces for working in small groups, computer rooms and study tables equipped with up-to-date technology.
    • Provision of specific equipment and furniture for the libraries in question.
    • Subscriptions to journals and databases in Habitat and Territory.

Furthermore, Universitat Miguel Hernández has planned the construction of an LRRC at the Elche Campus with a total surface area of 8,000 m2 and featuring 1,600 study places distributed throughout its different rooms and facilities. The project will include public areas, library areas, user services, common spaces and services and equipment areas. The LRRC will also have flexible multipurpose areas which will require a minimum of effort to alter for other uses, and can often be accomplished by simply changing the layout of the furniture. The layout and distribution plan will be one typical of an LRRC, allowing the use of spaces for teaching, as well as individual and group learning and research in accordance with the stipulations of the EHEA. This means the creation of a wide variety of spaces and areas as well as the provision of a broad array of services for different users.
